The Nutrimill Grain Mill

Everyone knows whole grains are loaded with nutrition. But did you know that within a few days of milling, much of that nutritional value is lost to oxidation? The way to bake foods with the full nutrition — and the fresh flavor — that’s available from grain, is to use freshly ground flour from a home grain mill.

Grain mills, historically, have accomplished their grinding with rotating stones, and stone mills are still available. But in recent years most of the home grain mill market has shifted to newer style “impact” mills, the most popular of which is the Nutrimill. Compared to most other mills, the Nutrimill offers advantages in speed, flour quality and ease of use. Its impact design uses a chamber with concentric rows of food-grade stainless steel fins rotating at high speed. As grain kernels are struck by the stainless fins, they’re burst into fine flour without the grinding friction of older style machines. This approach keeps temperatures lower than many older types of mills, helping to preserve nutrient values. And the Nutrimill’s 1-34/ horsepower motor makes all of this fast and effortless — no crank-turning!

The Nutrimill grinds flour into its own self-contained flour bin to prevent kitchen messiness, and makes up to 20 cups of flour at a time (or less, if you want.) It can mill wheat (both hard and soft), oat groats (dehulled oats), rice, triticale, kamut, spelt, dried pinto beans, popcorn, dried sweet corn, split peas, buckwheat, barley, rye, millet, teff, quinoa, amaranth, sorghum, dried mung beans, chopped chestnuts and soybeans. Texture is adjustable within a range from coarse to ultra-fine flour.

The Nutrimill is available from Pleasant Hill Grain. In addition to grain mills, the Nebraska company offers a range of machines for food preparation, from Bosch mixers (great for dough kneading) to gravity water purifiers, dehydrators, vacuum sealers, heirloom seeds, and much more. They also have many varieties of bulk whole grains, beans, rice and oilseeds in six gallon buckets. Clicking on their “Testimonials” link provides evidence of a strong customer-service orientation at Pleasant Hill Grain.
