Interview of Craig Maltby

Craig Maltby

Title: Nutrition communicator

Website or Blog www.balancedimmunehealth.com

Below are some of the questions we asked Craig and his answers.

What are your five most important accomplishments in life?

Marrying a wonderful wife.

Being a father of twin daughters.

My ability to make a living doing what I enjoy: conceptualizing, creating, writing and collaborating.

Riding in a limo with former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Talked about African agriculture.

Getting to do some nice travel with my family; Europe, NY, California, Alaska.

Oh, #6. Visiting the birthplace of the Allman Brothers in Macon, Georgia.

When did you get interested in immune system health?

I had worked with a number of people when we were all employed at a company in Iowa producing lutein, the eye health natural supplement.

A number of these people then joined another Iowa company---Embria Health Sciences--producing a novel immune health ingredient based on emerging science defining immune balance and how it works in a person's total health experience.

They explained the science to me,showed me a number of studies, and asked that I help them communicate the immune balance story. So here I am.

What do you do as a nutrition communicator?

I am working with human and animal nutrition companies to tell their stories and help them enhance relationships with customers and potential customers.

Why is supporting our immune system so important?

A person's immune system affects much more than just the ability to prevent or fight colds and flu. Immune function impacts digestive health, seasonal allergies, inflammation-based conditions such as arterial and heart health, joint and muscle pain, even neurovasular issues.

The immune system is complex; "boosting" it is an oversimplistic, outdated concept.

Any products or services you would like to share?

EpiCor. This is an ingredient found in multiple supplement brands. EpiCor also support my blog.

It has shown itself to balance immune response within the body; specifically, it appears to regulate sIgA and sIgE cells, NK (natrual killer) cells, T-Cells, etc, so that those cells needed to attack legitimate pathogens will do so very efficiently, and cells that signal attackers to back off and not overrepond will do that consistently as well. Many of our health conditions are caused by immune response that is over aggressive, even out of control.

As one Embria scientist put to me: "When you cut your finger, you want an agressive immune response, a bit of inflammation that will protect the wound until you can clean it and dress it. When you ingest a few harmless grains of pollen, you don't want an agressive immune response. That leads to constant sneezing, watery eyes, itching, etc. Your immune system should let that pollen pass."

Why do you talk about balancing the immune system instead of giving it a boost?

See above (I was a little wordy!). Since I started taking EpiCor about two years ago, my lifelong allergy symptoms have all but disapated. I still crank out a healthy sneeze once in a while, but the weeks of misery in the spring and fall have basically gone away.

Some research is also suggesting constant attempts to boost immune reponse though so-called megadoses of this or that may actually engender immune spiking and resistence, the classic pattern of needing more and more of something to achieve the same level of response, eventully rendering the original "booster" somewhat useless.

Balance is very bit as much-if not more--about "backing off" as it is about attacking.

In your opinion is there anything that can be done at home to balance the immune system?

I would recommend what many experts do: plenty of rest, especially during cold and flu season; lots of fruits and vegetables (the classic Mediterranean diet is great), regular exercise and any stress-reducing activities that work for you (not including 4 martinis at a time).

All of these can make a difference. Overloading on Vitamin C and zinc does not have any real science supporting that wivestale.

How long has your website been online?

BalancedImmuneHealth.com has been going since Sept. of 2008. I'm also on Twitter (Immunedude) and on wellsphere.com (Balanced Immune Health) and WEGOHealth.com (ImmuneDude).
