The benefits of fasting for boosting the immune system are:
• It increases the macrophages activity in the body. The job of macrophages are to destroy bacteria, viruses, and other harmful substances that are foreign to the body. They can also engulf weak abnormal cells in the body. The importance of macrophages are to serve as the first line of defense against harmful substances that enter the body. This includes toxins.
• It enhances Cell-Mediated Immunity. The white blood cells or the lymphocytes are the ones which distinguish and react to foreign substance. They are known to have 100,000 receptors that provide them the ability to recognize antigens. Each of these 100,000 receptors has protein compositions that allows them bind to the antigens. Upon facing a target, they utilize their packets of enzymes to digest targets of cellular material. When they catcs a bacterium, a metabolic process occurs that produces hydrogen peroxide and other active forms of oxygen. The neutrophils are manufactured in the bone marrow. A healthy bone marrow of an adult has the capacity to produce 100,000,000,000 neutrophils in a day.
• It promotes Monocyte Killing and Bacterial Function. The largest cells of the blood are called monocytes. It measures about 15 to 18 micrometers on the average. They consist 7% of the leukocytes. Monocytes are phagocystic in nature. They actively guard the body. They are capable of engulfing infectious agents and large particles. Monocytes are often observed on inflamed tissues or sites with chronic infections.
• It promotes Natural Killer Cell Activity: Natural killer cells were only discovered in 1975. It was observed that the cells in the blood together with the lymphoid tissues could eliminate tumor cells and other cells that are infected with a virus. It is hypothesized that the natural killer cells are responsible for preventing the growth of tumor cells and cells that are infected with viruses.
